The settlement of Northern Nadazovia in the 1840s

The article examines the process of settlement of the North Azov region in the 1840s, particularly its northern part in Donetsk region. Nowadays, in administrative terms, it is included in the territories of Volnovakha, Donetsk, Kalmius and Pokrovsk districts of Donetsk region.
The source base used for the research included documents from both national and foreign archives, the results of statistical studies of the early 20th century, and other printed sources. These are primarily documents of the State Archives of Zaporizhzhia region in Zaporizhzhia from fond 12, description 2 “Oleksandrivsk County Treasury, Oleksandrivsk, Oleksandrivsk County, Katerynoslav Governorate”.
The article reveals the general picture of the settlement of the outlined territory of the North Azov region of Donetsk region, identifying the settlements that were founded; the dates of the settlers’ arrival; the settlements from which the settlers arrived and the number of their families.
40 state settlements were founded between 1841 and 1848 by state peasants, Cossacks, military inhabitants and military settlers from Poltava, Kharkiv and Chernihiv governorates and western nobles from the western governorates (mostly from Kyiv governorate). These settlements are: Blahodatne, Bohoyavlenka, Valerianivka, Vasylivka (currently part of Mykilske), Vilne, Volodymyrivka, Hannivka, Heorhiivka, Dmytrivka, Yehorivka, Yelizavetivka, Zachativka, Zlatoustivka, Znamenivka, Ivanivka, Illinka, Kalynove, Karlivka (currently part of Volnovakha), Katerynivka, Kyrylivka, Kostiantynivka, Maksymilianivka, Maryinka, Mykilske, Novoandriivka, Novomykhailivka, Novooleksiivka, Novoukrainka, Oleksandrinka (currently part of Dokuchaevsk), Oleksandrivka, Olenivka, Olhynka, Pavlivka (currently part of Volnovakha), Petrivske, Platonivka, Prechystivka, Svobodne, Soniachne, Stritenka, Trudove.
The basis of the modern settlement network in the North Azov region was actually formed in the 1840s. And Ukrainians were the main contributors to the economic development of this steppe region.
